Mangano Announces Substance Abuse Awareness And Prevention Programs For Red Ribbon Week

Drug abuse awareness and life-saving presentations is being brought to the attention of parents, students and staff.

October 16, 2013- Nassau County Executive Edward P.Mangano is partnering with various Nassau school districts, PTA's and Adelphi University to bring drug abuse awareness and life-saving presentations to the attention of parents, students and staff as part of National Red Ribbon Week Oct. 23rd-31st. The presentations include Nassau County’s new video, entitled Impact, which aims to help pre-teens realize how their decisions affect those around them.

Presentations schedule is as follows:

  • Oct.17th: Overdose Prevention (Narcan) Training at the Nassau PTA Annual Conference and a Drug Abuse Awareness Presentation for students and parents at St Dominic’s High School in Oyster Bay.
  • Oct.21st: Drug Abuse Awareness Presentation for 5th graders at an East Meadow Elementary School.
  • Oct. 22nd & Oct. 24th: Drug Abuse Awareness Presentation for5thgraders in the Levittown School District.
  • Oct.22nd: Drug Abuse Awareness Presentationfor staff, parents, children at the Wisdom Lane Middle School inLevittown at 8pm.(OPEN)
  • Oct.23rd: Drug Abuse Awareness Presentation for 5th graders at a Seaford Elementary School.
  • Oct.24th: Overdose Prevention (Narcan) Training for parents and staff at Bethpage High School at 7pm. (OPEN)
  • Oct. 28th Presentations at Roosevelt Children’s Academy Charter School with Good Decision Making” for 4th & 5th graders and “This is Your Brain on Drugs” for 7th & 8th graders.
  • Oct. 30th: Drug Abuse Awareness Presentations for 7th& 8th graders at the Progressive School in Merrick and Overdose Prevention (Narcan) Training for Adelphi University students.

In support of substance abuse prevention, the Nassau County Department of Mental Health and Chemical Dependency Services is funding opportunities for schools to create their own Red Ribbon Week. This year, 27 districts and the Diocese of Rockville Centre are participating with activities ranging from the production of anti-substance abuse t-shirts, holding a Substance Use Awareness Walk, an assembly program on substance abuse and bullying and bringing recovering addicts in to speak with students.

Additionally, all high school students are invited to participate ina 30-second Public Service Announcement (PSA) contest designed to warn other teens about the dangers of misusing and abusing drugs. The deadline for entries is November 1st. Winning schools will receive cash prizes and students will receive county wide recognition along with having their video aired on local television channels.
