Huntington, NY - October 18, 2016 - On Tuesday, October 25th, Councilman Mark Cuthbertson will be hosting a one-day event designed to educate and better protect senior citizens from identify theft.
“In today’s technologically advanced world, identity thieves have more tools in their toolboxes to locate and steal our very valuable and sensitive personal information,” stated Councilman Mark Cuthbertson. Statistics have shown that seniors are even more susceptible to the creative criminals that prey on their personal information and steal their identities. “Identity theft can cause a significant amount of financial and emotional hardship, which is why it is so important help protect seniors from falling prey,” added Cuthbertson.
Paper Shredding: To better protect our seniors from becoming a statistic, Councilman Cuthbertson will be holding a four-hour paper shredding event at the Town of Huntington Senior Center, located at 423 Park Avenue in Huntington on Tuesday, October 25th, beginning at 11:00am, courtesy of Safety Shred. This will provide our seniors with a safe and environmentally friendly way of discarding old or unwanted personal documents and have them shredded (please note that there is a three banker-box size limit per person).
Avoid I.D. Theft Workshop: In addition, Councilman Cuthbertson will also be joining forces with the Suffolk County Police Department’s Identity Theft Unit to provide seniors with a thirty minute seminar on ways to help keep themselves and their loved ones safe. The seminar will take place concurrently on October 25th in the Senior Center Dining Room from 1:30pm to 2:00pm.
Medicine Disposal: We will also provide residents with the ability to safely dispose of medicines, thanks to the Suffolk County Police Department’s Second Precinct. Residents will be able to drop off unwanted and unneeded medications, which will be taken by the Suffolk County Police Department for environmentally safe disposal. The Town will also distribute information about the adverse environmental effects on groundwater and Long Island’s drinking water supply when proper protocols are not followed in disposing of pharmaceutical drugs.
“It’s about educating our seniors on ways to become more vigilant with their personal information,” said Cuthbertson. “Whether shopping day to day with charge cards, getting mail from the mailbox or identifying what not to throw away in the trash, there are many valuable lessons to be learned.”
