Elizabeth Turnbull: Field of Vision - A Solo Exhibition at Hersh Fine Art
Glen Cove, NY - October 20th, 2014 - Hersh Fine Art is pleased to announce Field of Vision, a solo exhibition of drawings and paintings by Garden City artist Elizabeth Turnbull. Field of Vision will be on view from November 8 until December 3, 2014. The artist will be present for an opening reception on Saturday, November 8, from 5pm to 8pm.
The recent acquisition of her oil painting “From the Laboratory of Barbara McClintock” for the private collection of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory has given Elizabeth Turnbull notoriety as one of Long Island’s premier up-and-coming artists.
Turnbull finds the unique personality and dignity of each object and person she paints. Field of Vision offers an array of provocative portraits and figures, some in muted chalk and others in rich oil paint, that bring the viewer into a quiet narrative. Likewise a series of paintings of glass bottles seems to be a conversation between contrasting textures as glass and fabric reflect and absorb the surrounding light - a juxtaposition of translucency and opacity. Even a single pear resting on lace, simply titled “Pear,” takes on an importance that is unexpected.
Though Turnbull’s skill as a painter is notable, her personal journey as a mother and self-taught artist is both inspiring and relatable, especially to women. Born in Texas in 1954, Turnbull moved to Andros Island, The Bahamas, in 1978 to work as a fabric designer. She lived there for twenty-four years, during which time she had a design career and raised a family, homeschooling her two daughters. Always passionate about art but lacking access to any educational institutions, she studied on her own, producing a series of still life pastel paintings of objects unique to the Bahamas. In 2000, she was awarded her first solo exhibition at the gallery in the Bahamian National Central Bank.
“My story is one of rebirth,” Turnbull states, as she describes the effort to find balance between career and motherhood, pursuing art with renewed vigor once her children were grown. After relocating to Long Island in 2008, Turnbull began formal classical training for the first time, studying at Atelier Armetta and the Long Island Academy of Fine Art in Glen Cove. She currently lives and paints in Garden City, Long Island.
Field of Vision will run from November 8-December 3, 2014, with a gallery reception on November 8 from 5-8pm. For details please refer to www.hershfineart.com or contact Rebecca Forster at 516-590-4324 or info@liafa.com.
