Written by Chris Boyle  |  24. October 2022

As per a post on their Facebook page, Schmidt's Market of Southampton closed their doors for good on Saturday, October 22 after 43 years of serving the local community.

In the store’s farewell Facebook post, owner Dennis Schmidt cited drastically-high rent as the reason as reason for the closure.

"My rent here is over $30,000 a month," owner Dennis Schmidt said. "When people are like, 'Oh, your parking lot is full,' I say, 'Well, it's $1,000 a day in rent, that's a lot of egg sandwiches.'"

On the day prior to closing, the retailer was offering a 40 percent discount on all items; anything left over after closing was donated to the Sag Harbor Food Pantry.

Schmidt noted that he is looking for a new location to re-open the store.
