Nonprofit LI Alzheimer’s Foundation Opens New Memory Fitness Center at Maple Pointe at Rockville Centre Assisted Living
Rockville Centre, NY - October 25, 2016 - More than 50,000 Long Islanders and their caregivers face the challenges and stress of Alzheimer’s disease every day. This combined with the fact that Long Islands’ population is aging means there is a rising demand for social adult day programs and services for Long Island’s growing Alzheimer’s community. To meet this increasing need, the Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation (LIAF) has opened its newest Memory Fitness Center program at the Maple Pointe at Rockville Centre Assisted Living, located at 260 Maple Avenue in Rockville Centre, NY. This ongoing program is the first for the organization in southern Nassau County.
Weekly Memory Fitness Center sessions are planned and supervised by professionally trained LIAF staff and social workers. Innovative programs for individuals facing all stages of Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias are offered including age-related mind stimulating activities, such as word games, art and music quizzes and fitness exercises. These sessions also provide caregivers a much needed respite. Memory Fitness Center sessions are currently offered on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Maple Pointe’s Rockville Centre facility.

“At Maple Pointe we are dedicated to serving our community. We recognize that families in Rockville Centre and southern Nassau County need the important programs that The Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation offers. The management of Maple Pointe welcomes the opportunity to provide a safe and comfortable environment for its program participants,” said Tammy Marshall, Executive Director, Maple Pointe Rockville Centre.
Statistics show that every 66 seconds someone in the United States develops Alzheimer’s disease. On Long Island the percentage of individuals over 60 is rising. It is estimated that by 2024 one third of Nassau County’s residents will be over 60, with this number expected to be slightly lower (26 percent) in Suffolk County. This population change will result in a significant increase in the number of individuals and families facing Alzheimer’s and related dementias on Long Island.
“Maple Pointe is a respected assisted living community known for its dedication to its residents. Their commitment and location make them an ideal partner. With this location now open and growing, more families have access to our programs, which maintain and enhance cognitive abilities. Caregivers also benefit from our programs by receiving a much needed respite while their loved ones are attending sessions,” said Tori Cohen, Executive Director of the Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation.
LIAF’s services include support groups for caregivers, in-home respite and a social adult day program that runs five days a week for early, moderate and late stages of Alzheimer’s disease or related dementias.
