Peter Rabbit
Sunday, November 13th at 12:00 PM
$12 Public | $7 Members | $5 Kids
For Peter Rabbit (James Corden) and his friends, the lure of local farm, owned by Mr. McGregor (Domhnall Gleeson), is irresistible. Sure, there may be the odd sly fox sneaking around the shrubs ready to pounce, but the array of tasty vegetables just waiting to be munched makes the risk worthwhile. But, then there’s Mr. McGregor himself. Grumpy, cantankerous and downright cunning, he cannot bear the thought or sight of pesky bunnies creeping around his beloved garden, and if there’s one thing he hates the most, it’s Peter. When McGregor begins dating his neighbour Bea (Rose Byrne), things begin to get complicated. Bea loves animals, and has a particular soft spot for Peter, who in turn finds her quite adorable. Before long, it’s man versus rabbit as the feuding pair go to great lengths to outsmart one another and win over Bea’s affection. A children’s favourite since Beatrix’s Potter’s The Tale of Peter Rabbit was published in 1902, this all-new adaptation seamlessly blends live-action with animation. James Corden (Ralph Breaks the Internet: Wreck-It-Ralph 2) leads the all-star voice cast, with support from Margot Robbie (Suicide Squad 2), Daisy Ridley (Star Wars) and pop-star Sia (The Emoji Movie). (USA, 2018, 95 min., color, DCP, Rated PG | Dir. Will Gluck)

Hong Sangsoo’s The Novelist’s Film
Tuesday, November 22nd at 7:30 PM
$15 Public | $10 Members
Junhee (Lee Hyeyoung, last seen in Hong Sangsoo’s In Front of Your Face) is a novelist who has grown disenchanted with her own writing. On a trip to see an old friend, she runs into a film director who was set to adapt one of her novels before the project fell through. One chance encounter leads to another and soon she finds herself having lunch with Kilsoo (Kim Minhee), a well-known actress also questioning her role as an artist. It’s then that Junhee has an epiphany: she will make a film starring Kilsoo. It won’t be like other films. It will be the novelist’s film.
For his 27th feature, Hong Sangsoo holds a mirror up to his own artistic process and asks what exactly it is we’re looking for from a work of art. As his characters discuss their lives and work and the ways they intertwine, Hong sets down a sort of manifesto for his own inimitable oeuvre before exploding it (or perhaps fully realizing it) in a moving final flourish. With sparkling performances from Lee, Kim and an incredible cast of Hong regulars, The Novelist’s Film is a summation of Hong’s career-long artistic project, even as it signals bold new directions. (South Korea, 2022, 92 min., Black & White and Color, In Korean with English subtitles, DCP | Writer-Director: Hong Sangsoo)

Paul Newman Tribute
The Hustler (1961)
Monday, November 28th at 7:00 PM
With Paul Newman’s daughter, Melissa Newman, in person
Book & Film: $43 Public | $38 Members
Film-Only: $25 Public | $20 Members
Join Paul Newman’s daughter Melissa Newman for an event celebrating the publication of the new book The Extraordinary Life of an Ordinary Man: A Memoir.
In The Hustler, Paul Newman is cocky poolroom hustler “Fast” Eddie Felson, a swaggering pool shark punk who works his trade in dingy bars and seedy poolrooms. Crashing after a match with king of the poolroom Minnesota Fats (a cool, graceful Jackie Gleason at his most effortlessly confident), he pulls himself back with the help of an alcoholic debutante on the skids (a delicate Piper Laurie) and a shifty, calculating promoter (an icy George C. Scott in a career making performance). Robert Rossen’s atmospheric adaptation of the Walter Tevis (The Queen’s Gambit, The Man Who Fell to Earth) novel rarely leaves the shadowy world of smoky poolroom caves—it seems to be lit by the spill from of overhead pool table lights and bar lamps—and it won well deserved Oscars for the deceptively austere art direction and smoky B&W cinematography. It was nominated for an additional seven awards, including best picture, director, screenplay, and acting nods for Newman, Laurie, Scott, and Gleason. the film also has a small cameo role for the ‘Raging Bull’ himself, Jake LaMotta. Despite being 60 years old it still stands the testament of time as one of the landmark films of its genre. Newman returned as an older, wiser, cagier Felson 25 years later in Martin Scorsese’s The Color of Money. (USA, 1961, 134 min., B&W, DCP | Dir. Robert Rossen)

Singin’ in the Rain (70th Anniversary Screening)
Tuesday, November 29th at 7 PM
$15 Public | $10 Members
On a short list of the greatest screen musicals ever made, Singin’ in the Rain began with legendary MGM producer Arthur Freed giving screenwriters Betty Comden and Adolph Green a stack of songs he’d written early in his career (with partner Nacio Herb Brown) – including “Broadway Melody,” “You Are My Lucky Star” and the title song – with the simple request to weave a story around the numbers. What emerged was a sublime marriage of song and dance, innocence and nostalgia, heart-tugging romance and surreal comedy (especially in co-star Donald O’Connor’s show-stopping “Make ’Em Laugh” routine). Co-director Gene Kelly shines as silent-movie idol Don Lockwood, whose career (and leading lady, hilariously played by Jean Hagen) is imperiled by the coming of sound – until he hooks up with lovely ingenue Debbie Reynolds. The brilliant supporting cast includes Millard Mitchell, Douglas Fowley and the great Cyd Charisse, whose long-legged “Broadway Melody” ballet with Kelly nearly steals the show! (USA, 1952, 103 min., Color, DCP | Dir. Stanley Donen & Gene Kelly)
