Halloween Weather Scare: NWS Issues High Wind Watch, Hazardous Weather Outlook

Written by Cait Russell  |  31. October 2013

If you're planning on trick or treating this evening, be sure to head out early - the National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Watch for Eastern Suffolk County starting late this evening through tomorrow afternoon. It is anticipated that high winds of up to 25-35 MPH, with gusts of up to 50 MPH, may cause damage such as downed trees and power lines, as well as other property damage. These high winds are expected to be worst tomorrow morning, and into the early afternoon.

Also in effect for Suffolk County is a Hazardous Weather Outlook - in addition to the high winds that are expected in the area, there is a chance of showers this afternoon, with a higher chance of precipitation later this evening, and tomorrow.

In Nassau County, a Hazardous Weather Outlook is in effect from Friday morning, through early afternoon. It is advised that high winds can be expected, and may be aggressive enough to reach the National Weather Service's "Advisory Criteria" during this time frame. There may be gusts of up to 60 MPH, as well as heavy percipitation, although at this time, the NWS states that there is a low chance of the High Wind criteria being met.

If you have holiday decorations in your yard or lawn furniture outside, be sure that these items are properly secured before the higher winds hit Long Island this weekend. It is also advised that those with high profile vehicles take extra precaution when driving, as the high winds may cause difficulties in driving your vehicle.

Be sure to check back for the latest updates as this story continues to develop - forecast updates will be added to this story periodically throughout the day. Luckily for Long Islanders, although it may be wet, Halloween hasn't been cancelled or postponed due to the weather, as it was in many areas across Long Island last year due to damage caused by Superstorm Sandy.
