AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM EDT THIS EVENING An Air Quality Health Advisory remains in effect for the following counties: Nassau and Suffolk. Until 11 PM EDT this evening. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of ground level ozone. The New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. The toll free number is 1 800 5 3 5, 1 3 4 5.

William Floyd School District Celebrates ‘Socktober’ by Donating 1,800 Pairs of Socks

Students and staff at John S. Hobart Elementary School, Moriches Elementary School and William Floyd Elementary School collected and donated approximately 1,800 pairs of socks to local shelters for “Socktober.”

Shirley & Moriches, NY - November 5, 2015 - Students and staff at John S. Hobart Elementary School, Moriches Elementary School and William Floyd Elementary School collected and donated approximately 1,800 pairs of socks to local shelters for “Socktober,” an annual drive organized by YouTube star Kid President to collect socks and other necessities for those less fortunate during the cold-weather seasons.

At John S. Hobart Elementary School, fourth-grade teacher Kaleigh Gordon and kindergarten teacher Stefani Hynes led the charge by having both grade levels work together on the school-wide event, which resulted in 878 pairs of socks donated by students, staff and families.

Moriches Elementary School donated approximately 500 pairs of socks to celebrate Socktober thanks to the generosity of their school community. Fifth-grade teacher Susannah Johnson and social worker Melissa Knoetgen spearheaded the event.

At William Floyd Elementary School, third-grade teacher Jennifer Colosa and permanent substitute Jonathan Germer coordinated the collection garnering 422 pairs of socks for the needy. All socks collected will go toward shelters serving residents of the William Floyd community.
