On October 29, Brookhaven Supervisor Dan Panico and Councilwoman Karen Dunne Kesnig were on-site for the demolition of a “zombie house” located at 18 Overlook Drive in the Mastic Beach marshlands.

This vacant, unfinished house was initially built without Town of Brookhaven permits, fell into disrepair, and became a blight in the neighborhood. The structure was damaged by a fire, then partially rebuilt before ultimately being abandoned. Earlier this year, the Town acquired the property with the intent to preserve it as open space.

In a gesture of sustainability, the windows from the property were donated by the Town to Habitat for Humanity. Joining Supervisor Panico and Councilwoman Kesnig at the site were members of the demolition team from the Town’s Department of Recycling and Sustainable Materials Management.

The property, now cleared, will be preserved by the Town as open space, helping to restore and protect the sensitive marshland area for the benefit of the community and environment.
