Drunk Driver Crashes in Freeport, Splits Own Vehicle in Half Upon Impact, Police Say

The First Squad reports the details of a Serious Auto Accident that occurred on Sunday, November 5, 2023 at 4:08 am in Freeport.
 
According to Detectives, a 28-year-old male was operating a 2014 black Toyota Camry westbound on Sunrise Highway in the vicinity of Mckinley Avenue when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a pole. Upon officers’ arrival, officers observed the rear half of the vehicle located in the roadway and the front half located up against the building of 249 W. Sunrise Highway. 
 
The driver, Hakeem Matheus, 28, of 275 Pennsylvania Avenue, Freeport and a male passenger, 27, were transported to local area hospital for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
 
Defendant Hakeem Matheus is charged with Driving While Intoxicated, Vehicular Assault 2nd Degree, Reckless Endangerment 2nd Degree, Reckless Driving, Assault 2nd Degree and operating an Unregistered Vehicle. He will be arraigned when medically practical.
