Suffolk SPCA Charges Holtsville Woman with Abandoning Her Cats in Closet After Moving Out

Detectives from the Suffolk County SPCA charged a Holtsville woman with abandoning her two cats after vacating an apartment and leaving them in a closet, found alive days later by apartment maintenance staff.  
 
Roy Gross, Chief of the Suffolk SPCA, said that its detectives charged Chelcea Newman, 32, with multiple misdemeanor animal abandonment charges, alleging that Newman abandoning her two cats by leaving them in a closet after vacating an apartment and removing all furniture and contents.
 
After abandoning the apartment, Newman never contacted apartment officials about retrieving the cats, and the cats were found alive in a closet with feces all over the floor days later by apartment maintenance staff who had entered the apartment after they were called by PSEG about a power interruption in the apartment. 
 
Newman was arrested on October 24, 2023, and released. She is scheduled to appear at First District Court in Central Islip, on November 13, 2023.
