Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced that a Hempstead man was arraigned for the murder of a man after the two had a verbal argument in September.
Kane Moore, 30, was arraigned Friday before Judge Caryn Fink on charges of Murder in the Second Degree (an A-I felony), and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (a C violent felony). He pleaded not guilty and was remanded. He is due back in court on November 22, 2024. If convicted, the defendant faces up to 40 years to life in prison.
“A simple gathering among friends turned deadly when this defendant allegedly pulled a gun during a card game and ended Maurice Sinclair Thomas’ life,” said DA Donnelly. “This senseless crime highlights the devastating impact of illegal guns in our communities. We are committed to holding defendants accountable for their wanton violence.”
DA Donnelly said that on September 21, 2024, at approximately 1:00 a.m., Moore, Maurice Sinclair Thomas, and a group of friends were playing cards in the rear parking lot of 134 Yale Street in Hempstead.
An argument ensued between Moore and Thomas, and Moore allegedly pulled out a semi-automatic handgun and shot Thomas once in the left side.
Thomas was taken to NYU Langone Long Island Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:37 a.m.
The defendant fled the scene. He was arrested on October 21, 2024, in Detroit, Michigan, by members of the Detroit Police Department and the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force. He was extradited to Nassau County on October 31, 2024.
The case is being prosecuted by Senior Litigation Counsel Stefanie Palma of the Homicide Bureau under the supervision of Bureau Chief Jared Rosenblatt and under the overall supervision of Executive Assistant District Attorney for the Litigation Division Kevin Higgins. The defendant is represented by Mindy Plotkin, Esq.
The charges are merely accusations, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless found guilty.
