A stranded minke whale that was discovered in Goose Creek in Southold yesterday has died, according to the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society (AMSEAS).
“Unfortunately, the whale died overnight and was found in the same location where it was initially stranded,” the organization reported earlier today. “AMSEAS is working with Southold Town Police, Bay Constables and Highway Department to secure the whale and transport it offsite where a necropsy (animal autopsy) can be conducted.”
AMSEAS said the whale was about 18 feet long and thin in appearance when it was first found.
Because of its location AMSEAS said that the whale could not be safely moved yesterday. At the time they could not provide additional medical intervention. The whale was monitored overnight by local officials.
