Written by Lon Cohen  |  15. November 2022

People in Bohemia got a scare from a bear, according to Suffolk County Police.

Cops say that officers responded to a report of a possible bear sighting in Bohemia on Monday night.

“Police canvassed the area of Louis Kossuth Avenue at approximately 8:30pm and did not see a bear,” police told LongIsland.com.

Calls to Strong Island Animal Rescue League were also made by residents. The organization responded telling LongIsland.com on the phone that they were in touch with police and went by the scene but did not find anything.

Online posters to Facebook chatted about the sighting and posted a picture from a security camera supposedly of a black bear sniffing around a Long Island driveway. A video of the bear caught on a Ring camera was shared on Facebook

UPDATE 1 - Strong Island Animal Rescue League posted the below statement on its Facebook page.

“Supposed Bear on Long Island update. This is the post circulating on Ring saying that there is a Bear loose here on the island. The post was removed shortly after it was posted and then was crossposted dozens of times after . We checked the area and could not find this driveway on the block of the supposed sighting,no garbage pails we’re knocked down no tracks were found.we spoke to neighbors, police and Spca and shared that there is no solid evidence at this time, we know this could be a serious issue and are not writing it off , but at this time the original poster has not come forward and has not shared exact location and the fact that the post is down so quickly it could be a hoax. Thank you for all the tips and information it definitely helped us get on the scene fast and that is important in a case like this . We will continue to update and share our info with the proper authorities.”

UPDATE 2 - Suffolk police say that the timestamp on the video was November 9th and they have yet to locate the person who posted it or the location where the video was shot. It also appears the owner of the video took it down from the original Ring post not long after it was initially put up but other people had copied it and are circulating it.

We will continue to update this story as more information becomes available.
