Weather Alert

AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM EDT THIS EVENING The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties: Nassau, Suffolk. until 11 PM EDT this evening. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Ground Level Ozone. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. The toll free number is 1 800 5 3 5, 1 3 4 5.

When you think of motorcycle riders, the first thing that pops into your head is most likely not a teddy bear. But every year around the holidays a local chapter of the Red Knights Motorcycle Club brings visions of these cute and cuddly toys to mind. On Sunday, November 21, the club will hold an event to collect donations of new teddy bears for thousands of needy children on Long Island.

At 10:30am that day registration begins at Terryville Fire Department Headquarters located at 19 Jayne Boulevard in Port Jefferson Station and the ride kicks off at noon. Volunteer riders will journey to Painters’ Restaurant at 416 South Country Road in Brookhaven where the event ends with a special lunch. Town of Brookhaven Youth Bureau INTERFACE program is partnering with the Red Knights Motorcycle Club for the toy drive.

Brookhaven Town Supervisor Ed Romaine thanked the Red Knights Motorcycle Club for their generosity and continued support of the program.

“These contributions will make it possible for so many children in need to experience the joy of opening a gift this holiday season,” he said.

Riders and passenger’s participation fee is $20 or $25 without a teddy bear. The first 100 riders receive a free t-shirt. Anyone is welcome to drop off a donation at either the Terryville Fire Department Headquarters or Painters'. Non-riders can meet at Painters’ for lunch at 1pm.
