Weather Alert

AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT FROM MIDNIGHT TONIGHT TO MIDNIGHT EDT THURSDAY NIGHT The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following counties: New York, Bronx, Kings, Queens, Richmond, Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam. from midnight tonight to midnight EDT Thursday night. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Fine Particulates. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern. When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. The toll free number is 1 800 5 3 5, 1 3 4 5.

Mastic Beach, NY - November 18, 2014 - Free child car seat inspections will be offered to parents in Mastic Beach on Saturday, November 22, 2014, and a limited number of booster seats will be distributed free of charge. The safety initiative is being offered through the Suffolk County Police Department in conjunction with Legislator Kate Browning (WF-Shirley), Mastic Beach Village and the EAC Network. It will take place at Mastic Beach Village Hall from 10am-1pm and inspections are by appointment only.

Three out of four car seats in the United States are used incorrectly, which endangers the lives of thousands of children every year. Since most parents unknowingly install seats improperly, Suffolk County is offering free inspections in an effort to better educate parents about how to safely use a car seat. Certified technicians will be on site to conduct the inspections and to provide essential safety information to parents. For those in need, free booster seats can be made available.

“This is a valuable service that I urge all parents to take advantage of at no cost to them,” stated Legislator Browning. “By ensuring your car seat is being used appropriately, you are improving the safety of your child. Please make sure you call to make an appointment ahead of time.”

Inspections are by appointment only, so please call 631-648-7100 ext. 219 to reserve your spot on the list. Not all participants will receive a free booster seat. Seats are available based on need.
