AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM EDT THIS EVENING The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for the following areas: All five boroughs of New York City, and Westchester, Rockland, Nassau, and Suffolk counties. Until 11 PM EDT this evening. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Ground Level Ozone. The New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. Driver in Merrick Auto Accident Fled the Scene, Later Arrested for DWI

The Nassau County Police Department reports the arrest of a Merrick man for Driving While Intoxicated that occurred on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 11:40 pm in Merrick.

Merrick, NY - November 18, 2016 - The Nassau County Police Department reports the arrest of a Merrick man for Driving While Intoxicated that occurred on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 11:40 pm in Merrick.

According to police, Seventh Precinct Officers responded to an auto accident in front of 1813 Merrick Road.  Upon arrival witnesses stated that a male wearing a black sweatshirt and dark shoulder length hair had fled the scene on foot.  Officers search the area and stopped a male fitting the above description on Alice Street and Beach Street. The subject was observed to have a strong odor of alcohol emanating from his breath and unsteady on his feet.  Defendant Anthony Assabi, 30, of Merrick, was placed under arrest at 12:30 am after witnesses gave a positive identification as the driver of a purple 1993 Chevrolet Caprice, which caused the accident.

Defendant Assabi is being charged with Driving While Intoxicated and Leaving the Scene of an Accident. He will be arraigned on Friday, November 18, 2016 at First District Court, Hempstead.
