On November 19th, the Town of Brookhaven and Special Olympics New York (SONY) hosted the 13th annual “Polar Plunge: Freezin’ for a Reason” at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai. The event attracted nearly 600 plungers and raised more than $130,000 for Special Olympics New York.
Town Councilwoman Jane Bonner took part in the plunge. Her team, “Frozen Eagles,” raised $2,750.
“I applaud Special Olympics New York for making this year’s Polar Plunge a success and I thank all the plungers, volunteers, police, first responders and Town employees for helping the athletes achieve their dreams,” Bonner said. “Also, a big thank you to everyone who made donations to support this great organization.”
Special Olympics New York, Long Island Region has 4,000 athletes training and competing year-round in 22 Olympics-style sports. The athletes and their families or caregivers are never charged to participate.
