Nassau County District Attorney Anne T. Donnelly announced that a Hempstead man was sentenced today to 20 years in prison for firing seven shots at his victim outside of a Baldwin nightclub in July 2019.

Jermaine Grant, 37, was convicted after a jury trial before Judge Helene Gugerty on October 27, 2022, of one count of Attempted Murder in the Second Degree (a B violent felony) and two counts of Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Second Degree (a C violent felony). He was acquitted at trial of a tampering with physical evidence charge.

The trial began on October 20, 2022, and the jury deliberated for approximately four hours before reaching their verdict.

The defendant was sentenced today to 20 years in prison and five years’ post release supervision.

“This defendant stalked and cornered his victim, firing multiple shots as the man tried to flee. Jermaine Grant was shooting to kill,” said DA Donnelly. “My office is committed to vigorously prosecuting gun violence in Nassau County, taking guns out of the hands of criminals, and ensuring that they are held responsible for their crimes with significant jail time.”

District Attorney Donnelly said that, on July 28, 2019, at approximately 2:00 a.m. in front of the D’Ambiance Nightclub in Baldwin, the defendant identified an individual outside of the club who was an enemy and followed the victim into an alleyway. The defendant then pulled out a gun and fired seven shots toward the running victim. The shots all missed, and the victim was able to flee uninjured.

The defendant was arrested later that morning in Hempstead by members of the Hempstead Police and Nassau County Police Departments.

The case was prosecuted by Senior Litigation Counsel Stefanie Palma of the Homicide Bureau. The defendant is represented by Joseph LoPiccolo, Esq.

From January 1 to November 30, 2022, approximately 335 weapons have been seized in Nassau County. In the same time period last year, approximately 236 weapons were seized.
