Hempstead, NY - November 30, 2016 - The Village of Hempstead recently teamed up with the Hempstead School District’s Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School and Adelphi University to help Hempstead students strengthen their skills in various fields related to science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). During the event students met and bonded with community leaders, including Village of Hempstead Deputy Mayor Luis Figueroa.

Adelphi’s pre-existing STEP Program, but includes additional supports from the Mayor’s office, such as mentors for students who require additional assistance, partnership with local African American and Latino business and civic leaders who can model achievement, and continuing engagement with the Mayor and Trustees to address student development and ensure student success.  Students participating in the program were selected because they show great promise.

The program was a part of the Mayor’s effort to instill the values of President Obama’s nationwide My Brother’s Keeper initiative throughout the Village of Hempstead. The initiative is intended to provide talented young African American and Latino youth with valuable support in the areas of STEM and introduce them to potential career opportunities in those fields.
