AIR QUALITY ALERT IN EFFECT UNTIL 11 PM EDT THIS EVENING An Air Quality Health Advisory remains in effect for the following counties: Nassau and Suffolk. Until 11 PM EDT this evening. Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of ground level ozone. The New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should consider consulting their personal physician. A toll free air quality hotline has been established so New York residents can stay informed on the air quality situation. SCPD: Yaphank Church Damaged by Fire

Suffolk County Police Arson Section detectives are investigating a fire that damaged a Yaphank church this morning.

Yaphank, NY - December 8th, 2013 - Suffolk County Police Arson Section detectives are investigating a fire that damaged a Yaphank church this morning.
 
Police responded to a fire at the Yaphank Presbyterian Church, located at 65 Main Street, at 2:02 a.m. after a 911 caller reported a fire. The investigation into the fire has been hindered due to the extensive damage to the church but the cause of the fire has been deemed non-criminal.
 
Graffiti found on an exterior wall of the church is not related to the fire. The graffiti had been present for at least two days and similar graffiti was found on two other nearby buildings in Yaphank.
 
The historic church was built in 1851 and also served as a community center and refuge for residents seeking shelter.
