The body of an unidentified female was found at the Lawrence Aviation Industries site in Port Jefferson Station yesterday, according to Suffolk County Police.

On Friday morning, December 8th, at about 11:50am, a person reportedly found the body of an adult female at the former aviation parts manufacturing site, located at 100 Sheep Pasture Road in Port Jefferson Station. The body was taken to the Suffolk County Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy to determine cause of death and identity of the deceased, according to police.

Suffolk County Police Homicide Squad detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the discovery of the body. No other information is available.

The Lawrence Aviation site has been surrounded by controversy for decades.

In March, two men were charged with the 2021 stabbing death of another man found on the Greenway Trail, near Clifton Place, which is adjacent to the Lawrence Aviation site.

The 152-acre property was deemed an EPA Superfund site after its former owner had crushed a stockpile of 55-gallon drums filled with toxic chemicals spilling their contents into the ground, poisoning the soil and groundwater. The plume made its way from the property on Sheep Pasture Road to the Long Island Sound a mile and a half away through the village of Port Jefferson where the EPA has set up two groundwater pumping stations to filter the toxins.
