$256 Million Powerball Jackpot Delivers to New York Schools and Lottery Retailers

Written by Chris Boyle  |  09. December 2024

While a lucky individual purchased the sole $256 million jackpot-winning Powerball ticket in Queens, all New Yorkers are benefiting from the December 7, 2024 Powerball drawing with $13.1 million in combined aid to education and retailer commissions and hundreds of thousands of dollars in additional prizes.

Powerball sales in the run up to the recent win generated $11.2 million for New York’s public schools. Additionally, sales for the game generated $1.9 million in commissions for lottery retailers – many of which are small businesses.

“It’s an exciting and lucky holiday season across New York State, with a massive Powerball prize in Queens and millions of dollars to help our schools and small businesses,” said Gaming Commission Chairman Brian O’Dwyer. “Every time a New Yorker buys a lottery ticket, they are making an investment in our state’s future.”

The winning ticket was sold at Hua Lan Supermarket at 25-03 Parsons Boulevard in Flushing. Multiple New Yorkers won prizes of $50,000 or more during the Powerball roll up between October 26, 2024 and December 7, 2024, including:

  • One Powerplay third prize winner of $500,000;
  • Two Powerplay third prize winners of $250,000;
  • Two Powerplay winners of $150,000;
  • Two Powerplay third prize winners of $100,000; and
  • 18 third prize winners of $50,000

The New York Lottery continues to be North America's largest and most profitable Lottery, contributing $3.8 billion in Lottery Aid to Education for fiscal year 2023-2024 to help support education in New York State.
