On Tuesday, January 17th at 7:00 PM, Huntington’s Cinema Arts Centre continues its exploration of culturally significant classic film with a viewing of ‘The Godfather Part II’ as part of its Best of the Big Screen series.
In August 2022, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the release of The Godfather Part I, the Cinema Arts Centre held two sold-out screenings of the acclaimed first entry to Francis Ford Coppola’s mob trilogy. Now in 2023, the Cinema is bringing the second film back to the big screen so that Long Island audiences can experience this historical film on the big screen.
Part II of the Godfather trilogy continues the saga of the Corleone Family, serving as both a prologue and a sequel, extending over a period of 60 years and three generations. Chronicling, through striking flashbacks, the rise of youthful Don Vito Corleone (Robert DeNiro replacing Marlon Brando) to Mafia chief in the early 1900s in the Little Italy section of New York City, as well as the career of Corleone's son Michael (Al Pacino) from his patriarchal prime, having assumed power of his family’s criminal empire, to his foray into the casino business, and eventual decline.
Winner of six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, and Best Supporting Actor of DeNiro, the script was again co-authored by director Francis Ford Coppola and Mario Puzo, the author of the popular novel about the American mafia.
The Cinema Arts Centre’s ongoing Best of the Big Screen series features screenings of critically acclaimed and culturally significant films. The films are introduced by film historian and NYS librarian Philip Harwood, who provides insight on the film’s importance to the history of cinema and shares little known details on the creation of the film.
"The Godfather Part II, as with is predecessor, perfectly represents the gradual maturing of the gangster film genre,” says Philip Harwood. “As with all of the films in the Best of the Big Screen series, these films have been chosen not only for their cultural pertinence, and the fact these films have been selected for preservation in the U.S. National Film Registry by the Library of Congress, but also that they are just great to see on the big screen with an audience."
