North Massapequa, NY - December 15, 2014 - Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice announced the sentencing today of a North Massapequa man for sexually abusing an 8-year-old girl during baseball practice sessions in Plainview.
Rosendo “Rusty” Torres was sentenced by Nassau County Court Judge Tammy Robbins to three years in prison with 10 years of post-release supervision. Torres will also have to register as a sex offender upon release. He was found guilty in July by a Nassau jury of five counts of Sexual Abuse in the 1st Degree (a D violent felony).
“As a professional athlete, people looked up to this defendant and trusted him to teach America’s favorite pastime to their children. Instead, he violated that trust and committed horrible acts against a defenseless young girl,” DA Rice said. “Though nothing can erase the hurt and pain caused by this defendant, I hope this sentence will provide a measure of justice for his victim and her loved ones.”
DA Rice said that Torres abused one girl under age 11 while acting as a youth baseball coach for the Town of Oyster Bay. The abuse occurred from April 2012 to May 2012 during baseball practice sessions in Plainview.
Torres was arrested by the Nassau County Police Department on May 8, 2012.
