Members of the Suffolk County Police Department said goodbye to Acting Commissioner Stuart Cameron during a walkout at Police Headquarters, located at 30 Yaphank Ave. in Yaphank, on December 17 at 3 p.m.

Cameron will be retiring after a nearly 37-year career with the SCPD. Cameron’s most recent assignment was Acting Commissioner, a title he held on two separate occasions since 2018. Cameron has been the SCPD Chief of Department since 2015, a title he earned after serving as both the Chief of Support Services and Assistant Chief of Patrol.

He began his career on February 25, 1985 and served the residents of the Second Precinct upon graduation from the academy. Cameron rose through the ranks, reaching the rank of captain in July 2000, taking over as the commanding officer of the Planning and Community Services Bureau. A year later, he moved to Highway Patrol Bureau as the executive officer before spending a decade in the Special Patrol Bureau as both the executive and commanding officer.

Cameron was honored in 2016 with the department’s Daniel P. Guido Leadership Award and was named the department’s Cop of the Year in 1990. He also earned Cop of the Month three times during his career along with numerous command and department recognitions.
