PIX11 News says it will showcase the 1970 WPIX Yule Log footage on Christmas from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., alongside the original 1966 version airing from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m this year. Both renditions of the holiday classic can also be streamed on PIX11.com/live.

The globally acclaimed WPIX Yule Log has become a cherished annual tradition, synonymous with holiday celebrations for families.

Debuting in full color on Dec. 24, 1966, at 9:30 p.m. on WPIX Channel 11 in New York City, the Yule Log has evolved into an enduring symbol of festive warmth.

Filmed in 1966 on 16-millimeter film at Gracie Mansion, the residence of then-Mayor John Lindsay, the original footage underwent a 1970 re-shoot on state-of-the-art 35-millimeter film due to wear. A mishap during the initial shoot, where a protective screen was removed, resulted in damage to an antique rug at Gracie Mansion, necessitating a change in location.

A matching fireplace was eventually discovered in Palo Alto, California, prompting a crew to conduct the re-shoot. This time, a flawless 7-minute loop was captured, showcasing the fire at its peak. Since 1970, this iconic fireplace footage has enthralled audiences in the tri-state area and beyond.
