Girl Scout Troop 1257 helped improve a community with their "Adopt the Pike" program.

Nassau County, NY - December 21, 2015 - Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano (4th from the left) and Town of Hempstead Councilman Ed Ambrosino (4th from the right) welcomed Girl Scout Troop 1257 from Franklin Square to the Theodore Roosevelt Executive & Legislative Building where they honored the troop for their continued efforts in giving Hempstead Turnpike curb appeal.

“Girl Scout Troop 1257 is dedicated to building a better Nassau County and I thank them for their 'Adopt the Pike' program which is improving our community,” remarked County Executive Mangano.

Under the direction of Girl Scout Leaders Christy McKenna and Lisa Mazarese the troop has been taking inventory every few weeks of the storefronts on a section of Hempstead Turnpike, jotting down ideas of what they could do to improve the appearance of each individual storefront, and working to make it happen.

Every few weeks the girls grab their work gloves and get busy using brooms, trash grabbers, and 30 gallon trash bags, then set out to maintain their section of Hempstead Turnpike. The girls hope their “Adopt the Pike” idea catches on, and that other troops will adopt sections in their towns. Having seen the girls in action, local store owners have found gratification in sweeping outside their storefronts with a renewed sense of pride.
