A winter storm rolled into the area overnight, one that is causing havoc across the country. According to reports, the bomb cyclone is putting millions at risk with frigid temperatures, high wind, snow and rain.

On Long Island, PSEGLI reported at 11:15am that there were 390 active outages affecting more than 5,100 customers. The utility says that crews are out responding to power outages.

“Gusty winds may cause tree limbs to break, which can pull down wires, causing outages,” PSEGLI said. “Heavy rain can cause hazardous driving conditions so please drive with caution. If you do happen to lose power, simply report it through our mobile app, message us here on Facebook, or text OUT to PSEGLI (773454).”

MacArthur Airport in Islip is reporting all flights are on time as of 7:22am this morning. But, according to the New York Times, over 250 flights have already been cancelled out of the three major airports, JFK, La Guardia, and Newark.

Rather than a white Christmas, this storm is bringing a lot of rain to Long Island ahead of the holiday with wind gusts to be up to 50 mph in some areas. Local flooding is also a danger. Up to three inches of rain is possible after the storm subsides on Friday evening. But that will bring another problem with it as temperatures are expected to plummet this afternoon to well below freezing. That freezing weather is expected to stick around until after Christmas Day on Sunday.
