Special Weather Statement issued December 27 at 10:28PM EST by NWS Upton NY A brief period of freezing rain is possible with the onset of rain between 1am and 4am. Temperatures have radiated into the upper 20s to 32 F this evening under clear skies and calm winds. Temperatures are likely to rise just above freezing in most areas by the time of rainfall onset as cloud cover quickly increases. Ground temperatures though, may still linger around freezing in spots through 5am, causing patchy icing of untreated surfaces. Motorists are advised to slow down and use caution traveling tonight, and be alert for patchy black ice, particularly on elevated roadways.

Hauppauge's James Hagens Anticipated to be National Hockey League's First Draft Pick

Hagens, a NCAA player representing Boston College, most recently represented the United States at the 2024 IIHF World U18 Championships.

18-year-old Long Island resident has been tearing up the ice during both college play and on the international stage, and is currently projected to be the first pick in the National Hockey League's upcoming draft this June at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. 
 
Hagens, a NCAA player representing Boston College and hailing from Hauppauge, most recently represented the United States at the 2024 IIHF World U18 Championships, leading in scoring with nine goals and 13 assists, winning a silver medal and being named the tournament MVP and Best Forward by the IIHF Directorate.
 
Previously playing for the U.S. National Team Development Program, where he scored an impressive 187 points over two seasons, Hagens jointed Boston College earlier in 2024, where he plays alongside his older brother, Michael.
 
Hagens' next game is the Junior World Championship against Latvia on Saturday, December 28.
