Old Bethpage is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Oyster Bay in Nassau County, New York. The community is served by the Plainview-Old Bethpage School District.
In 1695 Thomas Powell agreed to the Bethpage Purchase, a transaction with four native tribes in the area in which about 10,000 acres for 140 English pounds. Powell chose the name Bethpage because his land was situated between Jericho and Jerusalem on Long Island. The Central Long Island Railroad came to Bethpage in 1873, and the rail line was primarily used to bring bricks to the developing area of Garden City. One of the nation’s first highways, the Vanderbilt Motor Parkway, built by William Kissam Vanderbilt II. Bethpage State Park was opened in 1932, with almost the entire park falling within Old Bethpage.
According to the 2010 census, the population of Old Bethpage is 5,010. The median household income is listed as $119,653.
