Shelter Island is a hamlet and census-designated place off the coast of the North Fork of Long Island in the Town of Shelter Island, in Suffolk County, New York. The community is served by an undeveloped education infrastructure that provides schooling for grades K-12.
Shelter Island is named for the translation of the Algonquian name for the area meaning “island sheltered by islands.” In 1620 Shelter Island was part of the Plymouth Company land given to the Earl of Stirling by King James I. The land was later purchased by sugar merchants from Barbados. Compared to the Hamptons, Shelter Island is considered a more tranquil and calm area on Long Island’s East End, but many of the properties in the community are owned by wealthy New Yorkers who use the area as a weekend getaway.
According to the 2010 census, the population of Shelter Island is 1,333. The median household income is listed as $62,990.
