Southold is a hamlet and census-designated place on the North Fork of Long Island in the Town of Southold in Suffolk County, New York. The community is served by the Southold Union Free School District.
Southold is considered the first English settlement in what would later become the state of New York, since at the time the land was called New Netherlands, and was in Dutch control. The English Puritan settlers came from the Connecticut colony in 1640 under the leadership of Reverend John Youngs. The settlement was forcibly removed from the jurisdiction of Connecticut in 1674 by the Duke of York, after briefly being turned over to the Dutch in 1673. The name Southold is believed to be a misspelling of the name Southwold, of Suffolk, England.
According to the 2010 census, the population of Southold is 5,748. The median household income is listed as $49,898.
