Yaphank is a hamlet and census-designated place in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County, New York. The community is served by the Longwood Central School District and the South Country Central School District.
The community was named for the Native American word meaning “bank of a river.” The two mills, built by John Homan in the mid-1700’s, inspired the original name for the community, Millville. It was discovered when the post office was built in town that there were no less than thirteen other Millvilles in New York State. When the Long Island Rail Road came to Yaphank in 1843, a large commercial district began to develop, including a grist mill, a dress maker, two lumber mills, a printing shop and a stage coach line.
According to the 2010 census, the population of Yaphank is 5,945. The median household income is listed as $83,015.
