BMW keys are equipped with a unique chip that prevents unauthorised start-up of the vehicle. These chips can't be programmed by anyone other than the car's owner.

Dealerships charge around $400 for the new key fob that is that is programmed to the car. Some locksmiths can also program replacement keys at only a fraction of the cost.
