Federal Employers Liability Act

Injured railroad workers have a special legal right to compensation under the Federal Employers Liability Act (FELA). Contrary to the state laws on workers' compensation which are governed by federal law, this federal law requires railroad workers who are injured to show that their employers were negligent.

Congress approved the FELA in 1908
